The Hallé
Sir Mark Elder Conductor

Debussy Nocturnes (Nuages and Fetes)
Wagner  Meistersinger Suite
Strauss Ein Heldenleben

Fortunately, Sir Mark Elder's 2024 farewell concert was a brief goodbye, not a complete departure. He returns to Nottingham as Conductor Emeritus of the Halle Orchestra to lead this symphonic programme beginning with two of Debussy's characteristically Impressionistic Nocturnes. With nuanced nods to the French landscape, “Nuages” represents the melancholy movement of softy-tinted clouds, polarised by “Fêtes”, a rhythmically-drive depiction of a buzzing, vivid carnival.

Wagner's Meistersinger Suite condenses the four and a half hours of Opera into twenty minutes, taking in key moments from Act Three, including the apprentices’ Dance, as well as the grand Prelude to Act One – music that’s as colourful as the opera’s often spectacular stagings. Increasing the drama is Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life), an electrifying self-portrait which masters the dynamic capacity of the immense late 19th century orchestra. With a deliberate nod to Beethoven's triumphant key of E flat, glorious horn fanfares and virtuosic violin melodies run throughout Strauss’s six continuous sections that depict the gallant hero's battles, relationships, and tranquil retirement.
