Junyan Chen piano
Ravel Le Tombeau de Couperin
Corea Children’s Songs (selection)
Brahms  Piano Sonata No. 2 in F-sharp minor, Op. 2

Runner-up at the Leeds Piano Competition in 2024, Junyan is already acclaimed for her adventurous programming and exhilarating vivacity. Her first visit to Nottingham begins with Ravel’s elegant suite based on a Baroque forlane and written as a dialogue with the past and a memorial to friends killed in the first World War. Next, are jazz pianist, Chick Corea’s Children’s Songs which reflect his curious and playful character with simple beauty. Finally, one of Brahm’s earliest works, his second sonata is a highly Romantic and virtuosic fantasy, passionate, yet serious and dignified. It was dedicated to his great friend Clara Schumann, whose husband Robert called it an “incredible work… by a twenty-year-old!”.

Our Sunday Piano Series performances are informal and introduced from the stage, and you can chat with the pianists in the bar after the concert and still have time to get back home for Sunday Lunch!
