Beethoven Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, Op. 110

Rising-star Lithuanian pianist, Ignas, features music by composers from his homeland, bookended by two great masterworks for piano. At the centre of his recital are Preludes by the pioneering artist and composer credited with bringing professional music to Lithuania, MK Čiurlionis, and dramatic miniatures that explore Christian mysticism by Alvidas Remesa. Opening and closing the performance are Bach’s epic Chaconne, transformed into a brilliant showpiece by Feruccio Busoni in 1916, and one of Beethoven’s final three sonatas. Nostalgic and lyrical in mood, the sonata ends like the Hammerklavier, with a great fugue that is considered one of Beethoven’s finest achievements.

Our Sunday Piano Series performances are informal and introduced from the stage, and you can chat with the pianists in the bar after the concert and still have time to get back home for Sunday Lunch!
