The Hallé - DriveTime Concert
Tickets from £10.00
Our famous Drivetime Concert is back! The world renowned Hallé Orchestra takes to the stage from six o’clock with an hour of spectacular music. This year’s theme is the World Cup in Canda, Mexico, and the USA. Passion for world class football is sweeping the globe, and what better opportunity to explore some great music?
There’s something for everyone, and if you’ve never heard a live 80-piece orchestra before it’s a great place to start. There's a friendly, fun atmosphere and the pieces are introduced from the stage by a presenter, so it's ideal for families too. The concert starts at 6pm so you'll miss the rush hour and there's plenty of time afterwards to grab a meal in town or get the kids to bed.
The concert opens with Aaron Copland’s epic Fanfare for the Common Man, and the World Cup’s host countries are represented by Sousa’s catchy Liberty Bell - the official march of the Canadian Forces (as well as the theme tune to Monty Python!), and Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’s vibrant Danzón. There’s more music from the USA with John Adams’s exhilarating Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Leonard Bernstein’s hopeful America, and combative Mambo from West Side Story. The current champions Argentina are celebrated with Astor Piazzolla’s sultry Libertango, and we look forward to England’s progress with Elgar’s rousing Nimrod and one of the country's unofficial anthems, Land of Hope and Glory in the Pomp and Circumstance March.
Our amazing Drivetime Choir also get in on the act with Handel’s Zadok the Priest, adopted as the Champions League anthem, and John Rutter’s barnstorming arrangement of the American Spiritual, Down by the Riverside.
