With just one theme, Sir Edward Elgar captured the legacies of his closest friends and family in fourteen characterful variations. 

Audiences have speculated for decades over the hidden theme at its core - the 'Enigma' - commonly quoted instead of its written title, Variations on an Original Theme. Perhaps it's a quote from Auld Lang Syne, or a reflection from a Mozart opera. Regardless, the enigma is so artfully woven into the score that it remains one of orchestral music's biggest and most exciting mysteries.

Over a century later, students from the University of Nottingham Music Department perform their own compositions, each a variation on Elgar’s original theme. Who knows what they'll find during their study, perhaps the hidden enigma itself…
